The Maine Health Access Foundation applauds decision of the Supreme Court, allowing 61,000 Mainers to preserve their access to affordable coverage through the Marketplace.
More than 61,000 middle- and low-income Mainers can breathe a sigh of relief now that the Supreme Court, in its King v. Burwell decision, has found that those living in states that use the federal marketplace can continue to access subsidies that make their health insurance more affordable. In a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court affirmed the intention of the Affordable Care Act is to provide subsidies for people with lower incomes in all states in the nation, not just those that created their own state-based marketplaces.
The Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF), the organization behind the www.enroll207.com website and marketing campaign that connects Mainers to enrollment assistance, is pleased to learn of the Court's decision. Dr. Wendy Wolf, CEO of MeHAF, said, “The Supreme Court’s decision to allow federal subsidies in all states has a significant impact on the lives of over 61,000 people in Maine. In some cases, these subsidies have made health insurance affordable for the first time in people’s lives. Having coverage can be life-changing and supports better health, wellbeing, and the ability to lead productive lives. For this reason, we applaud today’s decision by the Supreme Court.”
In addition to www.enroll207.com, MeHAF has supported a diverse group of state and local organizations to help people enroll in Marketplace insurance plans, including Maine’s Community Action Programs, health centers, and the Consumers for Affordable Health Care HelpLine, 1-800-965-7476, which people can call for enrollment assistance and other questions about health care and coverage.
Now that the Supreme Court’s decision has upheld the intention of the Affordable Care Act, MeHAF and its partners look forward to connecting more Maine people to affordable coverage, particularly through the next open enrollment period that starts November 1, 2015.
