MeHAF Awards $100,000 to Support Nonprofits Serving the Uninsured

December 21, 2011

In September of 2011 the Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) awarded a total of $100,000 in grants to five, Maine-based nonprofit partners to support their ongoing work to represent the needs and experiences of Maine people with limited access to quality health care and health insurance coverage.  Consumers for Affordable Health Care, Maine Center for Economic Policy, Maine Medical Education Trust, Maine Equal Justice Partners and the Maine Primary Care Association each received $20,000.

“These nonprofit organizations consistently work both on behalf of people who are uninsured and underserved and the health care providers who assure that people have access to needed health services,” said Dr. Wendy J. Wolf, President and CEO of MeHAF.

The organizations represent low-income Maine people in a variety of ways including informing people of options for affordable health insurance, ensuring and improving access to quality primary care, and conducting policy research and advocacy that benefits MeHAF’s priority populations.

Each year MeHAF provides approximately $4 million in grants and program funding across the state to improve access to quality health care.  MeHAF was established in 2000 as a result of the sale of the not-for-profit Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Maine to the for-profit Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Maine.
