AOS 93

Clean Beets On a Budget

Students in Central Lincoln County's AOS 93 know you can boil beets or put them in a cake. Through a MeHAF Fund for the Future grant, these students now receive at least six locally grown fresh items on their school lunch plates each week, augmented by a curriculum that teaches them about food. From produce to seafood, kids are learning about where their food comes from and how to prepare it. Thanks to the efforts of Focus on Agriculture in Rural Maine Schools (FARMS), school nutrition directors are connecting with more convenient and dependable sources for fresh foods, and local farmers are able to supply the schools at a reasonable profit while learning how to process and package fresh foods for institutions.
