In 2004, the National Health Service in England began the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) initiative to increase access to evidence-based psychological therapies for common mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. Based on guidelines developed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, the IAPT uses a stepped care pathway that recognizes that different levels of severity of a condition need to be matched with appropriate types of interventions.
Dr. Alan Cohen, a GP and the Primary Care Advisor to the IAPT, describes the new service structure and this system transformation. Including the stepped care approach, treatment guidelines, competence-based workforce training, outcomes, the impact of implementing IAP, and what remains to be done. He also discusses how the IAPT approach supports primary care providers and the role of primary care providers and their team in supporting patients.Panel Discussion- LD 1333 from Maine Health Access Foundation on Vimeo.
