Improved Health

The promise of good health requires more than ensuring that people can go visit their doctor or go to the hospital when they're sick. The everyday resources available to us where we live, work, and play significantly influence our health and the health of our communities. Local recreational opportunities, the availability of fresh foods, school lunch quality, housing, economic conditions and public health policies all impact the health of Maine people.

MeHAF believes no single organization or sector can be responsible for the health of a community. Improving health requires us to think holistically in supporting coordinated action from businesses, nonprofits, educational institutions, hospitals, government, and economic and community development organizations.

Our approach to improve health in communities focuses on place-based, collaborative, community-led efforts that can help transform communities into supportive environments that help everyone lead healthier lives.

Healthy Communities

The Healthy Community Grants program provides resources to Maine communities with the commitment and capacity to engage a broad group of stakeholders across multiple sectors, including marginalized populations (individuals who are uninsured, underserved, and those with barriers to care, etc.) who encounter numerous health challenges, in conversations about the health of people in their community and the social, economic, and environmental factors that contribute to how healthy people can be. Health Equity Capacity Building

MeHAF’s Health Equity Capacity Building grants program aims to strengthen community-based organizations in Maine that are led by members of certain underserved communities facing health disparities and that are working to advance health equity.  The program pairs three-year unrestricted operating support grants with targeted technical assistance, provided both in group and one-on-one settings. Technical assistance focuses on building the stability, effectiveness and overall organizational capacity of under-resourced organizations and communities. LEARN MORE
